two words

or rather two names really. david asscherick. bam. that man is so being used by God.

he was here for a week long series that ends tomorrow with church. i think it is the first series i have ever attended all the way through and because i actually wanted to. and i am so glad i did. i was totally blessed tonight. things clicked in a new way. maybe i will get into that some time.

i was feeling tired and a bit dejected tonight. i wanted to cry. like multiple times. i'm lonely. and i'm not talking about emotionally lonely, i'm talking deep heart lonely. and sometimes i can't quite put on the brave face. but tonight was a blessing in spite of that. that sermon man, so good. and then a long talk with one of the besties. and now just soaking in the Sabbath with some music, some writing, and my Sabbath candle flickering beside me to set the mood. i love friday nights. they are my favorite and i hate going to bed because that brings an end to my special serenity. but i guess tomorrow will be good too.

happy sabbath. that's a good phrase.

i be learnin'

i started grad school today. it sounds weird to say but gives me a really proud feeling all at the same time. i am a graduate student! i guess i feel accomplished for making it this far, for having the dedication and desire to do it. maybe it's because i didn't really know what else to do, or maybe that i wasn't figuring out how to fit into the world outside of college, but i'm here now. and it's good. really good.

this past summer i was at a new camp with new people. i made friends and had a fun summer, but i never quite found my groove, never quite felt like i was sufficient or good at what i was supposed to be doing. but here, here i fell into my groove on the first day of class! i feel confident, in a way that i haven't felt in a long time. and that makes me happy. it makes me happy because i think it reaffirms that just maybe i'm on the right track. maybe this actually IS where i am supposed to be.

i felt today that i love school. most people hate it, but i decided i love it. it feels so right to me, to be in a place where nothing is familiar, and yet it is. i know what is expected of me. i know what i have to do. and since i now know i love it, i know that i am meant to be in the classroom—either as a student for however many more years and degrees, or eventually as a teacher. i have so much to learn, and i doubt i will ever be one of those really verbose teachers, but now there is a drive behind the learning. i need to learn this material for me. and in learning for me, i learn it for my future students.

i had new grad student orientation yesterday, which i feel plays into my confidence today. i was griping about having to go, but it was actually quite inspiring. the provost (which i don't even really know what a provost is, or if southern even had one) had our devotional. i was in and out of focus, but some of what she said really hit home. she was talking about the israelites when they were on the border of the promised land. the spies that had a negative report spoke of giants and how the israelites were but grasshoppers to the native people. they had doubts and were up against three main giants of discouragement. the first was feeling overwhelmed and incapable. this has obvious applications to new students, we feel like we may not be able to make it. the third was some presumption—oh, we've got this, no problem. but the second giant, which speaks directly to me, was fearing change.

the israelites were constantly bemoaning what they had left behind, if it wasn't egypt, it was whatever the previous situation was on their journey. they liked the status quo. they feared the unknown and they let it cripple them. they passed up the freakin' promised land because they let fear rule them, and when they did realize change isn't a horrible thing, that growth is so good, it was too late.

that struck a different kind of fear into my heart. i have feared and resisted change all my life. but by resisting, i am dispelling the opportunity for growth. i would rather be stagnate than luscious and vibrant. and i don't want that attitude. i do not want to miss out on my promised land because i was too stubborn in my fear.

i have been placed in a new environment and it is a bit scary. but i made the decision to face it the best i can. that made me more confident today. and with the affirmation that i'm in a place that is good and right, i've been dancing all day!

taturner

trying to integrate into a new camp can be a challenging experience. there are always the staff that have been here previously that have their friend groups already set up, the new staff that are trying to find a friendly crack that they can slip into, and then there is me. i think we figured out that i am not only new (that wasn't really hard to figure out...) but i am the second oldest staff member of the younger generation. this camp is filled with so many just-out-of-high-schoolers. it's a bit ridiculous.

but whatever. i can deal with it. one of my best friends at camp is only 20 years old. another is 24. there are some good times. there are some crazy times. basically that's code for i really like the staff but hate the campers. maybe hate is a strong word, but apparently a very real perception by some people. i kid you not, my counselor said that i hate kids out loud in her counselor meeting. great. that meant an awkward talk of clarification that i do not indeed hate kids, but i just strongly dislike the bratty ones, and that there happen to be a lot of bratty ones here. not my fault, ok.

but that's camp for ya. lots of d-r to the ama. drama llama, big fat mama llama. (if you know adam newbold, he's awesome, and where this llama business comes from). it seems to follow me, from counselors to the dreaded unrequited camp crush. yep. fun times indeed.

but there are always the cool people. and the people that are cool that you are just meeting. but i always get disgusted with the time limit. you are so involved with these people and camp, and yet too busy to really get to know everyone that you want to. grr. dumb time. you want it to go quickly in a camper aspect, but slow with the friendship aspect.

i sound a bit disgruntled. maybe i am. the fact that i want to go drown my sorrows in a bottle of rootbeer and some popcorn has something to do with it. i feel like that sentence didn't even make sense. that's what camp does to you, sucks the logical brains out of you until you end up doing the pigeon and frog poses in yoga on the office floor with three other sleep-deprived and giddy people. true story.

and just so you know, volleyball sucks with kids. they don't get it. they just don't.

oh, and i almost forgot about why i called my post taturner.

so there's this guy here named chris tataryn. the assistant director for some reason really cannot get chris tataryn and krista turner right. it always comes out kris taturner. so people just call me taturner. and that is that.

shakespeare knew a thing or two

shakespeare has surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly?) been on my mind today. i generally outwardly pretend to not dig him so much, but secretly, i actually really enjoy his stuff. not in a i-have-read-and-seen-every-freakin'-play-he's-written-and-memorized-every-sonnet kind of way, but i like him. especially when i can experience his material in the shakespeare tavern in downtown atlanta. but i diverge.

you have to give the guy props. the guy had wit. much of which goes over our heads. and while we have made some of his one-liners a bit cliched, there is truth to them nonetheless. it is his two most famous quotes that popped into my head today. one with literally no brain activity connected to it, and the other hitting home in such a real way.

[insert rose quote here]

i work at a greenhouse. i stopped to smell a couple of roses today. insert rose quote into brain. marveled at the smell, ......and moved on.

[insert parting quote here]

i helped to coach my old high school's track team this spring. and wouldn't you know it, those little stinkers snuck into my heart without me even knowing it. we had our end of the year track banquet tonight. it was so good to see those kids again, even though i didn't get the chance to talk to many of them. but my heart hurts a bit. i probably won't see any of these kids again. i won't get to see them mature out of their punk high school attitudes. i won't get to see them excel at whatever they choose to do. i'm going to miss out on these people that i invested time into.

i hate goodbyes. it really is sweet sorrow because you can love someone, so dearly without even realizing it and then they are plucked away from you, and even if you have the best of intentions, they still just become a hazy memory of some sort of good love-filled time.

shakespeare had it right. although goodbyes might be presented a little less dramatically in my life (mostly), the pain is still in the parting. but the good is still in the parting too. those sweet memories of love-filled times.

turned shower on
climbed in
too hot
adjusted temperature
enjoyed a good soaking
turned around to shampoo hair
gaze falls on loofah
eyes lock on spider on loofah
the loofah i had had my hand next to twice

WHY. ARE. YOU. ON. MY. LOOFAH??!

of all the places!
why is it there?
was it alone?
was it a spider rendezvous?
are there spider babies in my loofah?

grab a shampoo bottle
can't use it, it's mine
grab a different shampoo bottle
tentatively shake spider off of loofah
slam shampoo bottle down on it
gleefully watch it wash down drain

moral of story:
i encounter way too many spiders

walked into bathroom.
picked up toothbrush.
started brushing teeth.
started pacing.
walked out of bathroom.
walked back into bathroom.
instant focus on spider.
a seriously large spider.
made grossed out noises.
made distressed noises.
thought about whacking it with a towel.
too big, not going near that thing.
got dad.
had him kill it.

hiya mickey!

i sing alto. loud and proud, purposely going for the lower notes. the lower my voice, the more fun it is for unknown reasons. i even relish when i have a hacking-up-my-lungs cough because it means i can sing and talk even lower than normal.

retail has changed that.

i have become a high pitched speaker. for some reason, i associate a high register with upbeat and peppy and totally agreeable, and for some reason, i have decided to take on this trait. krista turner, formerly of the low register clan, does not exist in public anymore.

it annoys me.

i slip into it without thinking, uttering 'uh-huh! why yes i can get that hanging flower basket down for you!' in a tone an octave and a half higher than what i normally speak in. i sound like an idiot. a very peppy and eager to serve idiot, but an idiot nonetheless.

i mean no offense to anyone that naturally has a higher voice, but let's face it. a tiny and high voice does not become me.

this is not a problem at home, or with my friends, but retail man, it gets me. it's like a case of dr. jekyll and mr. hyde. only for me it's like dr. man voice and mrs. minnie mouse.

and on top of this, my nose is still recovering from surgery, so half the time i am stuffed up and nasally.

a nasally minnie mouse. that's hot. oy vey.

woke up.
laid there.
finally put on glasses.
instant focus on ceiling.
instant focus on spider on ceiling.
big spider.
big spider missing legs.
are those legs near me?
are those legs in my bed?
are those legs IN ME?
mental freak out.
check under pillow for legs.
because that will solve everything.
no legs.
push aside mental anxiety.
because there were no legs under my pillow.
so that solved everything.

get out of bed.
avoid spider.
can't ignore spider forever.
yes i can.
what if it disappears during the day?
HECK TO THE NO!
on the war path.
brave up.
grabbed a shoe.
attempt number one.
fail.
spider 1 krista 0
glare at spider.
not trying that again.
go for broom.
jackie chan that piece.
carcass.
tiny carcass.
tinier than originally anticipated or observed.
light bulb.
it was missing legs.
triumph.

sgt. pepper's

i'm isolated. and i'm not talking about 'i am living at home with my parents and semi-taking a break from the world around me' isolated. i'm ok with that for the most part, and even relish a little bit of isolation now and again. but this kind of isolated is the kind where none of my friends are at the same point in life as me. they might be close, but it's more like a relay race, meeting up to exchange a baton, but one fading out as the other takes off. no one is right here, right now. and i'm kind of lonely in the right here, right now.

this is too personal, and not eloquent. that means it's late at night.

i'm a little bit heart-weary tonight. there are some underlying reasons i'm sure, but there were just some random things that happened tonight that are making me uneasy as i am processing them.

for starters, i'm used to adults ribbing me about when i'm going to find somebody and get married, but now my friends at home have started. i am pretty much the only single in our group, and it comes up in conversation. great. i get all awkward and embarrassed with all that attention focused on me. and hey, when you are pretty much the only adventist young adult in town, dating is just, well, not an option. people could get onto me for not having an open mind when it comes to other guys but i will say this— i may not know much of what i want, but i do know that if i end up dating or marrying, i want him to be an adventist. i want him to share my faith and the principles behind it.

another thing that is bothering me, is that tonight i hung my head in shame when i told an acquaintance that i am studying english and art. my friend brian was quick to defend me, bless him, but i am so upset with myself. it's just that around my friends from home, i feel so dumb compared to them. one of them is a pharmacist, who is married to a nurse. another is a doctor who is married to a computer programmer. one is an engineer. one is doing her master's in comparative literature (emphasis on russian), and she is married to an astrophysicist. can you see where i am coming from? i'm friends with a freaking astrophysicist!

i'm ashamed of myself for being ashamed. God help me, i will never let that happen again, never be ashamed of what i love. God blessed me with a talent for english and a love for art. He blessed me with a sharp mind and creativity. it may not be in the ways that seem really smart to me, but i should never be ashamed of what i am good at. and i am good at it. i have to believe that.

the third thing that is making me upset is, in reality, ridiculous. it's because of a tv show. it's just that i can identify with the main character entirely too much. she over-analyzes, doesn't recognize her own amazingness, and unfortunately, makes some bad decisions when good is staring her straight in the face. oh it makes my heart hurt because i see myself doing the exact same thing. it's stupid, i know, to get so caught up in a character, but hey, i'm good at putting myself in other people's shoes, and these shoes walk just a little too close to home.

so right now i basically just want to cry. or watch a chick flick that will make me cry. or spend hours on pinterest or something. but it's after midnight. and that would be making a bad decision when a good one is staring me in the face.

i feel like the illustration on the game cranium

my mind was just blown by some serious short-cut-more-understandable-and-easier math equations. they told me that is what would happen when i learned algebra in seventh grade. then they said that's what would happen with all things geometry (maybe they forgot about proofs). and finally they said that derivatives are just life handed to you on a platter in calculus.

but no. my mind was not blown by any of those things. it was blown by some basic math concepts that i learned after college because my elementary, jr. high, and high school math teachers failed to teach them to me.

let me explain. remember those nasty word problems of "two trains are coming towards each other on the tracks. one is going 50 mph and the other is going 70 mph. how long until they will meet each other?" i hated those. i could seriously care less, other than wishing the trains would just crash into each other and be done with it. but i was forced to do them. i'm pretty sure i would just write the numbers down, do some half-hearted attempts at chicken scratch process and pull some number out of nowhere. i'm also pretty sure i got them wrong almost every single time. but now, because someone explained it to me so clearly, with a nifty little equation that was heinously withheld from me, i understand. light bulb on.

Time = AB
           A+B

the other light bulb (yes, more than one. maybe i have a chandelier over my head just waiting to burst into light. don't judge.) was with combinations. this was the equation my book explained it with:

10C3 =       10!
            3!(10-3)!

um, come again? since when do we have exclamation points in math other than to express our extreme dislike of it? it just makes me read it very emphatically in my head. teensy 10C3 equals TEN!! over THREE!! Times 10-3!!

i took one look at that and just felt frazzled.

now i know you can just use   n*n-1*n-2 . . . x
                                            k*k-1*k-2 . . . 1

i know it doesn't look any better, kind of like the word 'kleenex' in code, but you just plug numbers in, simplify and you've got your answer. all without the needless emphatic inner voice screaming improper punctuation at you.

there you have it. my enlightenment for the day. . . and did i just actually blog about math? and how excited i was by it?

what is the world coming to?

nerd.

they say time heals all wounds, but they never say how much time. and they never mention the scars. maybe they do in the cliché sense that the wound has healed, but the healing leaves a mark that will never go away, something that will always be a reminder whether you want it there or not. and they never tell you that scars are actually strange beasts in and of themselves. how they give the appearance that all is well and tidily taken care of, when the almost irreparable damage lurks just below the surface. they never tell you how it will never be the same again. they also never tell you how scars are numb to the undiscerning touch, but when a heavy blow comes, they are actually quite sensitive and pain can penetrate quite quickly. sure they may offer a great story, proof of your battle-hardened glory. but then, you never can quite escape from the story that time has not provided a happy ending for yet.
